在一项前瞻性嵌套式病例对照研究中，日本筑波大学的Hiroyasu Iso博士及其同事测定了血清脂肪酸，并将此作为中风的潜在危险因子。该小组研究了参加心血管危险性调查的7450例年龄在40到85岁之间的日本人的冰冻血清标本。他们共发现197例中风，每一病例都与三例对照相匹配。
在197例中风病人中，75例为出血性，122例为缺血性。研究人员发现中风病人的亚油酸和花生四烯酸比例较对照者低。另外，他们的饱和及单一饱和脂肪酸比例较高。两组的n3多不饱和脂肪酸比例相似。
在校正高血压、糖尿病、血清总胆固醇和其他心血管危险因素后，与亚油酸增加5%相关的多元优势率在出血性中风为0.81，总中风为0.72，缺血性中风为0.66，陷窝梗塞为0.63。在校正其他脂肪酸后，亚油酸和缺血性中风之间的关系仍然非常明显。
Iso博士的研究小组认为，总体说来，这一研究结果支持饮食中摄入亚油酸预防缺血性中风的潜在重要性。他们建议进行临床试验来证实亚油酸摄入和缺血性中风危险性之间的因果关系。
