瑞典麻醉医生们发表于北欧麻醉学报（Acta Anaesthesiol Scand）上的一项研究显示：胸部硬膜外镇痛（Thoracic epidural analgesia，TEA）能有效缓解心脏手术后疼痛，同时并无与呼吸功能有关的副作用。
瑞典S-75185 Uppsala市Uppsala大学医学院心胸麻醉科的A. Tenling及其同事解释，心脏手术后常常发生持续的肺功能损害，损害主要与胸骨切开后疼痛有关。胸部硬膜外镇痛能有效地缓解术后阶段的疼痛，但如用局部麻醉药，可能影响呼吸肌功能。
为了了解情况是否如此，研究人员用呼吸量测定试验和呼吸诱发体积描记法来比较30例冠状动脉搭桥术（coronary artery bypass graft surgery，CABG）的病人，这二组病人为全身麻醉联合或不联合TEA。
术前予TEA可显著的降低呼吸肌功能的几个指标包括用力肺活量（FVC），第1秒用力呼气量（FEV1），最大呼出压（P(E)max）和最小吸气压（P(I)max）。然而，胸腹肌协调性基本没受影响。
研究人员报导，术后第1天内，联合或不联合TEA组病人的呼吸参数基本相差不大，唯一的显著变化为联合TEA组病人的最大呼出压增加，推测与疼痛减轻有关。
A. Tenling得出结论，TEA组冠状动脉搭桥术病人的由于疼痛缓解，呼吸肌强度增加，因而咳嗽能力改善。心脏手术后，FVC、 FEV1、 P(I)max和休息时呼吸不受TEA影响。
